The roots are made finely ground into powder and made into a beverage. The roots contain a lot of kavalactones or pyrones – a psychoactive component of the Kava plant that is responsible for its relaxing and calming effect. The Kava powder from Kava roots are now being exported worldwide. In fact, it is gaining popularity in the US for its relaxing effects.

If you want to wind down, hang out with friends during a special occasion, or want to relax after a stressful event, don’t hesitate to have some Kava. Kava reduces tension, stress, and anxiety. It is even as effective as tranquilizers, anxiolytics, and other such medications, yet free of the side effects so typical of these drugs. It does not cause dependence or tolerance buildup.

Kava has also been used in the treatment genitourinary tract ailments including vaginitis or infection of the vagina, gonorrhea and menstrual cramps. It is a natural diuretic that aids in flushing the body of toxins and breaking down fat. It is a natural anti-inflammatory, thus useful for rheumatism, bronchial congestion, cystitis and prostatitis.

Traditionally, Kava is consumed through grinding, chewing and pounding of its roots and then added to cold water and consumed as quickly as possible. Today, we have various forms to make the preparation easier. One of these is the Kava powder. The preparation of Kava beverage from the powder would take some time but its all worth it once you have experienced its effects. One tablespoon is added in a cup of water but if you want to increase the strength and potency, you can add up to eight tablespoons. The powder is left to soak in water for 30 minutes. Lecithin is added to further emulsify kavalactones with water. The mixture of Kava powder, lecithin and water is then blended, and then strained using a strainer such as cheesecloth. The fluid is squeezed out of the pulp and then the rest is discarded leaving the kava liquid. The beverage is then now ready to be consumed. It is brown in color and tastes like mud but you can add lemon, cocoa, coconut water, or coconut milk to improve its flavor.

Kava, however, should be avoided during pregnancy, if lactating and if suffering from depression. It could increase the effect of alcohol and some drugs used for psychological treatment. Always consult a medical practitioner for use of Kava for more then 3 months. Do not drive after consuming Kava. It is a mild sedative and causes drowsiness.
