What is Kava?
As mentioned earlier, kava (Piper Methysticum) is an herbal powder made from roots of the kava plant. After many years the kava plant is harvested and the roots are cleaned, placed in the sun for drying, and then ground into powder. This powder is made into the drink that is so calming and relaxing! The kava plant itself is a large shrub that can reach heights of 10 ft.-15 ft. and has green heart shaped leaves; the stems can be solid green, solid red/black, striped or spotted.
Kava seems to be pretty new , when did people start using it?
3000 years ago a wild form(Piper Wichmanii)of the kava plant was domesticated in the Pacific Islands of Vanuatu. From there it spread with people as they traveled and settled new islands. Most Pacific Island settlers of the time carried all their possessions with them, including important food plants, when they traveling. Though it may have been available in small quantities in health food stores near you for years, only recently has this product received national TV and Press coverage in the USA and other countries.
How was the kava plant used in the polynesian culture?
"'Awa[kava] was used principally as a narcotic to induce relaxation and sleep. In historic times it has been used by all classes of people, especially fisherman, farmers, hunters, and the like whose strenuous work left them stiff and taut with fatigue...The distinction between the 'awa[kava] drinking of the ali'i [Hawaiian chiefs] and commoners was one of manner and purpose of using the drink. The ali'i class drank for pleasure largely, the kahuna[priestly] class ceremonially, and the working people for relaxation after labor."(Native Planters in old Hawaii. Handy and Handy; Bishop Museum Press; Honolulu, Hawaii 1972. Pg. 193).
What is the kava plant used for today?
Today kava plants are gaining popularity all over the world for the relief of Stress, Anxiety, Insomnia, Muscle and Back Pain, Tension Headaches, Menstrual Pain! Our kava powder is prepared the traditional way but it can work wonders for modern ails!
What is the strainer bag for?
The product comes as a coarse powder, not as fine as flour. The strainer bag filters out all the coarse kava plant particles while allowing the fine powder to diffuse into the water. We learned to prepare kava in Fiji, Tonga and Samoa and we promote the method used in those countries (we figure that after using the kava plant for so long they must have developed a pretty good method).
